Friday, September 7, 2012: This International Literacy Day, World Education is proud to announce the inception of the Total Reading Approach for Children (TRAC) in Kampong Province, Cambodia.
In response to disappointing national literacy scores among grade-school children, Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) is shifting to a phonics-based reading curriculum for children in grades 1-3. The TRAC program, as annouced today, will be implemented by World Education and the Kampuchean Action for Primary Education to support MoEYS new curriculum by developing indicators to measure students’ progress and identify areas of weakness. School-based literacy coaches will respond to the individual needs of students. TRAC will also employ a comprehensive Rapid Response System to support children and families' learning process. This will include:
• Encouraging parents to promote reading at home
• Mobile learning opportunities through a TRAC-developed Khmer language smart phone application
• Provision of reading aids, including flashcards, reading games, and puzzles.
TRAC expects to reach more than 2,000 children in Kampong and, eventually, to expand to other regions of Cambodia.
The TRAC program has been awarded funding through USAID, World Vision, and AusAID’s All Children Reading Grand Challenge for Development. World Education looks forward to implementing the Total Reading Approach for Children to endow thousands of Cambodian children with the power of literacy.
